has anyone ever tried to create a sacred alter space with only energy and intention? where you able to keep the sacred'-ness of the place without objects or aragment of the materials you foud there? even if you left and then came back? Do you think that the sacredness of this place could be felt by others, or is it only meaningfull to those whose have taken part in the energy work there?
it's an intersting concept to me, what do you think?

Re: Non-physical alters?
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 9:07 PMyes, sarah. all the time. i'm a hedge druid/witch and don't like to be incumbered with tools that i then need to rely on. i can cast a circle and create sacred space while walking through the woods, when the spirit moves me. i gave up relying on 'props' a long time ago.
i do understand that the use of tools, robes, altars and other tools, can help raise and maintain ritual consciousness, but fear that one then becomes reliant on them. the freedom to cast a circle and work magick anywhere is wonderful.
i do live in the northern forests, so it is easy for me to work anywhere. but there are special places everywhere. it's cool to take the ritual to them, without a lot of baggage.

Sat, April 19, 2008 - 9:24 PMI thoguht so. I love creating alters like living works of art. but I am relizing somtimes the space needs nothing physical added to it. my art teachers allways warrend me not to "guild the lily". I think for the first time i understand that. Alberta is beutiful! I live in Minnesota so the northen forest are witin my reach as well, I've done alot of travel thgouhg the US and still am happyist in the forests "up north" They speak too me.

Re: Non-physical alters?
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 12:22 AMBack when I was an orthodox Wiccan (lol) when I was using a sacred circle to work magic, I would have never thought of leaving it in place. I was always taught that you deconstructed your temple after using it so the energy wouldn't interfere with anything or anyone else, like psychic litter or something. I do believe that certain energies built up over time can be felt by people who are sensitive to 'vibes' so to speak.
Now I don't use any tools at all - when I rarely do magic it's purely through intention and willpower - no tools, no sacred circle, just me. Every once in awhile I'll place a protective bubble around the house & car & that I sort of let decay over time until I get around to refreshing it. -

Re: Non-physical alters?
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 10:01 AMI don' think I've ever heard anyone discribe them selves as an othodox wiccan befor :) I understand the idea of leaving it as you have found it, but we all have a spiritual foot print as well as a pusical one, so the energy has be totaly washed washed away. likewise if you simply left that energy in a place and kept adding to it with the intention makeing the place sacred, what do you think would happen?

Re: Non-physical alters?
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 6:24 PMDefenately. You can cast your circle anywhere you like.No tools needed. Cause the only real tool is yourself. The rest is just props that help you concentrate.
The energy of the place depends. It could be a place that has a lot of magic by itself. Like a forest or a nice building. That energy will be picked up by others also.
It could also be that you like to do a ritual in your livingroom. You put away the kids toys, sweep the breadcrums and the dog hair from the floor and start your ritual. The next morning the visiting neighbour won't have a clue what you did the night before.Although she may feel more relaxed when she comes to your place.
What I like to do is dream travel. I have an astral temple. I can go there any time, any place.
Even my props are there, my helpers, my protection.. one big instant sacred space. -

Re: Non-physical alters?
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 7:16 PMSo do you think that humans can unkowingly put the energy there to make it a spiritual place, or "pump up" that energy simply by being there? Like Minnihaha Falls here in MN. All the Kids go there and climb behind the falls simply to do it. It's like an unspoken right of passage around here. The energy and focust that they bring to that pace, simply by participating in an unspoken right of passage, can it leave a spiritual foot print? even if that is not the intent of those who go? I only ask because it makes sense to me, but I want to know what other pagans think. -

Re: Non-physical alters?
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 1:03 PMI think it has a lot to do with context of usage. People can have fond memories of a place without it carrying a high spiritual 'charge' - places that are in heavy public use, like parks, hiking trails, ski resorts, the secret places that kids go - they may hold special memories for the visitors, but it's not the same as certain hills, groves of trees, land where a church or shrine stands or once stood, graveyards, etc. I think that places used for ritual eventually do build up a psychic presence that may draw other people to perform rituals or ceremonies in the same spots.
