I Recently bought My mother a Gardina and would like to capture the flower fragrence for an anoiting oil. but Every time I try and simmer the flowers and the oils together the smell of the oil overpowers the smell of the gardina. Any suggestions? (p.s. I'm going to cross post this)

Thu, April 24, 2008 - 4:56 PMi'm not sure. mineral oil should be quite neutral. a friend who markets oils uses almond and canola.

Thu, April 24, 2008 - 7:20 PMGrapeseed is also very mildly scented - you do have to be careful about heating it slowly over a low burner/flame, though - it scorches easily. -

Re: Help Needed
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 4:23 PMI was taught to make oils by my Great-Great Aunt Maeve and she would have made this suggestion. Take a very neutral oil (Vegetable, Grapeseed. Sunflower) and put some into a small jar. Take the flowers and crush them in your hands until the juices start to moisten your fingers, then put them in the jar with the oil, pressing them down with your finger or a wooden spoon (Stainless steel can neutralise some odours so aviod using metal spoons). Carry on until you have as much oil as you need in the jar, making sure all the flowers are completely covered in oil as there is a risk of them going mouldy if they aren't properly covered. Screw the top of the jar back on or cover with cling film (seran wrap) and put on a windowsill that receives direct sunlight for a good part of the day and leave there for at least 2 weeks. Then remove the petals and squeeze the petals through a cheesecloth to extract more oil. Throw the petals away and the oil is ready to use, the fragrance intact through natural heating by sunlight. Good luck and blessings, Michy
